Enhancing Outdoor Play at the James Hopkins Trust
At the James Hopkins Trust, outdoor spaces play an important role in supporting children with life-limiting conditions and complex medical needs. With a south-facing garden, the hospice team recognised the need for additional shade so that children and families could enjoy spending time outdoors comfortably and safely, even during warmer weather.
Working closely with the hospice team, Greenfingers Charity helped transform key areas of the garden by funding and installing new shaded structures and play equipment. The improvements ensure that families can spend more time outside together, protected from both strong sun and unpredictable weather.

Creating Safer, More Accessible Outdoor Spaces
The project focused on enhancing the existing play areas while ensuring they remained accessible, colourful and inviting for children of all abilities.
A basket swing was installed to provide an inclusive and engaging play experience for children who may need additional support while playing. Alongside this, an impressive sail shade was added above the roundabout play area, creating a cool and sheltered space where children can continue to enjoy outdoor play even on sunny days.
In addition, the project included the installation of unique, brightly coloured shade structures along the much-loved ‘Wavey Walk’ and around the soft play zones. These striking features not only provide practical protection from the sun but also add vibrant colour and visual interest to the garden.
The Impact of Hospice Garden Improvements
For children who attend the James Hopkins Trust, outdoor spaces provide opportunities for exploration, play and sensory engagement. However, exposure to strong sunlight can sometimes limit the time children are able to spend outside.
The addition of shade structures allows children and families to enjoy the garden for longer periods, ensuring the space remains welcoming and comfortable throughout the day. Whether children are playing, relaxing or taking part in therapeutic activities, the improved garden now offers greater flexibility and accessibility.
These improvements also support families and staff, providing sheltered seating areas where parents and carers can relax while children enjoy the outdoor environment.
Sarah Nash, Charity Manager at the James Hopkins Trust, shared her appreciation for the project:
“The amazing team has finished and we couldn't be more pleased, it looks incredible – even without the sun shining through it's just wonderful and such a fantastic addition to our garden space.”
