Little Harbour Children's Hospice, Cornwall

Thoughout 2019/20 we worked hard to provide an all-weather garden for the children, families and staff at the Little Harbour Children's Hospice in St Austell, Cornwall. This new garden with a vibrant structure will enable the life-limited children there to spend time outside with their families and carers, whatever the season.

The designer of this project is Darren Hawkes, who owns his own award-winning business, plus landscaping business Wheelbarrow Gardening, based in Cornwall. Darren took his inspiration from the landscape that surrounds him and his designs have a harmonious feel to them. He says "I love the relationship between plants and hard materials. The opportunity to highlight shapes both in foliage and form as well as in colour is one that I relish".

Here's one of Darren's concept sketches for Little Harbour that he created right at the beginning of the project, along with a picture of the finished shelter, which we think is stunnin. It provides the perfect place where, even on a wet day, the children will have somewhere safe, fun and protected to experience, whilst still being 'outside'.

WHY SUPPORT GREENFINGERS CHARITY?

Greenfingers Charity creates beautiful, therapeutic gardens for children’s hospices across the UK, giving children with life-limiting conditions and complex medical needs the chance to experience the joy and comfort of nature. These carefully designed outdoor spaces provide more than just greenery – they offer a peaceful escape from clinical environments, encourage sensory exploration and create precious opportunities for families to spend meaningful time together outdoors.

These life-enhancing gardens are only possible thanks to the support of generous donors, partners and fundraisers. By supporting Greenfingers Charity – whether through a donation, taking part in events like Garden Re-Leaf Day or incredible challenges such as the Kilimanjaro Climb – you help create and maintain these special spaces. Together, we can continue transforming hospice grounds into places of comfort, connection and joy for children and their families.
