Squire’s Garden Centres have announced that Greenfingers will be their beneficiary from the carrier bag tax which comes into effect in England on 5th October 2015. Squire’s made the announcement at GLEE, the leading garden retail event, which took place in Birmingham from 14th – 16th September 2015.
From October it is law that large retailers must charge customers 5p per carrier bag – we are delighted that Squire’s have chosen to donate all the funds their raise through the tax to us, which will directly contribute to creating even more inspiring spaces for children at hospices around the country.
Squire’s Garden Centres are one of the most successful garden centre brands in the horticulture industry so it is a great honour to be the recipients of their carrier bag tax.
There are 15 Squire’s Garden Centres across Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, Middlesex, North and West London and the business is set to celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2016. The business was founded by D.J.Squire in 1936, initially as a landscape gardening business which then developed into one of the first garden centre businesses in the UK when Twickenham opened in 1964. Since then the company has become one of the best success stories in the industry, remaining in the Squire family under the leadership first of D.J’s son Colin – who is still actively involved in the business – and, today, Colin’s daughter Sarah Squire who is Deputy Chairman.
Sarah Squire, Squire’s Deputy Chairman, commented, “We are delighted to support the work of Greenfingers and its garden projects for children in hospices. As a company we recognise the responsibility and opportunity we have to give back and make a difference in the communities in which we live and work. Squire’s will donate all profits from the 5p carrier bag tax to Greenfingers, to help them create stunning gardens that can be enjoyed by children and their families at hospices around the UK.”
John Ashley, Greenfingers Chairman, added “We are absolutely thrilled and enormously grateful to have Squire’s Garden Centres support us for the first year of the carrier bag tax scheme. Thanks to all at Squire’s, the money raised through the scheme really will make such difference to the lives of children and families who spend time in hospices.”
