Honda (UK) provokes nostalgia with ‘Childhood Memories’ garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live

The theme for Honda (UK)’s show garden at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live is ‘Childhood Memories’, designed to provoke nostalgic childhood recollections among show-goers of time spent outdoors in the garden.

The garden is the work of award-winning designer, Adam Frost, whose passion for gardening was nurtured at an early age by hours spent on his grandfather’s allotment. The garden features four key areas:

  -             Vegetable patch – peas, potatoes or onions; Grandad was always the                   expert

  -             Dipping ponds – nets and buckets at the ready in the quest to find out                   what EXACTLY lives in that murky water

  -             Lawn – perfect for a game of skittles with Granny, a session of                             swingball with your sister or a cup final kick about with your Dad on a                   Sunday afternoon

  -             Woodland area with tent – you, Dad, the dog and a packet of                               sausages.  Bliss.

The garden also draws inspiration from one of Honda UK’s nominated charities, Greenfingers.  The charity creates gardens for children with life limiting illnesses in hospices that provide spaces for families to spend time together away from the bedside - somewhere to have fun, play and laugh and also to rest, reflect and remember.

“Childhood memories are powerful things,” says Adam.  “Designing this garden has been really thought-provoking because a few of my own, very strong memories came out of the woodwork and it was really satisfying to be able include some of them within the space.

“Also, I’ve worked with Greenfingers in the past and being involved with a charity like that makes you realise exactly how important happy memories are for all concerned.”

After the show, rather than the traditional ‘plant sale’, Honda will break the garden down and the main elements will be donated and transferred into various Greenfingers hospice gardens around the UK.

Another part of the garden will be the ‘have a mow’ product demonstration area where show-goers can try out a variety of Honda Lawnmowers. In addition, a range of other Honda Lawn and Garden products will be present such as tillers, hedgetrimmers and leafblowers.

“This garden is really exciting for us and I’m looking forward to talking to show-goers about their garden memories as well as raising awareness of Greenfingers and the great work it does. I also hope that visitors will find our demonstration area useful - our products are designed to last a long time and we’ve heard stories of them being passed down from generation to generation” says Phil Webb, Head of Power Equipment at Honda (UK).
