Shooting Star: Courtyard Garden - HamptonReturn to Map

With limited space available, the new Shooting Star Hospice needed a bespoke design and garden for the courtyard area, directly outisde the bedrooms In a suburban setting, the hospice invited Greenfingers to create a garden scheme in the remaining ‘Courtyard’ area, a semi-circular site framed by the curved wall of the hospice building.

Greenfingers chose a design by Clare Matthews which had been inspired by the spiral galaxies like the Milkyway. With a 'shooting star' fountain at the centre, four raised beds curved out and away from the centre, with three different planting levels in each. The gentle lighting gave a wonderful ethereal quality, whilst the different height beds and sensory planting means that every child, however tall, or in a wheelchair, would be able to enjoy the garden. Seating was incorporated at the end of each raised bed.

The reaction of the staff to the works has been one of excitement and appreciation, with many volunteering to help out with the labour required to build it.

Our special thanks go to all major donors of materials – Bradstone, Hanson, Louis Poulsen and Rolawn.

In February 2009, Shooting Star extended their residential facilities which necessitated the re-location of part of the Courtyard Garden, in which Greenfingers was glad to assist.
